1. Roof Dimensions (Footprint)
Length of the building along the ridge
Horizontal distance from eave to ridge (one side)

Roof pitch = Rise ÷ Run. The sloped surface is longer than the horizontal run because of the pitch.

What Is Roof Area with Pitch?
The roof area with pitch is the actual sloped surface area of your roof — not the flat footprint it covers. This distinction matters enormously when ordering materials, because a pitched roof has more surface area than the horizontal area it sits on.
For example, a building with a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint has a 1,200 sq ft horizontal area. But if the roof has a 6:12 pitch, the true sloped surface area is about 1,342 sq ft — roughly 12% more material needed.
How to Calculate Roof Area with Pitch
The formula is simple once you know your pitch:
Sloped Area = Footprint Area × Pitch Multiplier
Where the pitch multiplier = √(rise² + run²) ÷ run.
Step-by-Step
Step 1 — Measure the footprint. Multiply building length × width to get the horizontal area (in sq ft).
Step 2 — Determine the pitch. Pitch is expressed as rise per 12" of run (e.g. 6:12 means 6" rise for every 12" horizontal).
Step 3 — Calculate the pitch multiplier. For a 6:12 pitch: √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 = √180 ÷ 12 = 13.416 ÷ 12 = 1.118.
Step 4 — Multiply. 1,200 sq ft × 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft of actual roof surface.
Step 5 — Convert to squares. Divide by 100 → 13.42 squares.
Common Pitch Multipliers (Cheat Sheet)
3:12 → 1.031 multiplier (3.1% extra)
4:12 → 1.054 multiplier (5.4% extra)
5:12 → 1.083 multiplier (8.3% extra)
6:12 → 1.118 multiplier (11.8% extra)
7:12 → 1.158 multiplier (15.8% extra)
8:12 → 1.202 multiplier (20.2% extra)
9:12 → 1.250 multiplier (25.0% extra)
10:12 → 1.302 multiplier (30.2% extra)
12:12 → 1.414 multiplier (41.4% extra — a 45° roof!)
Notice how a 12:12 pitch adds over 41% more surface area compared to a flat footprint. That's why steep roofs cost significantly more in materials.
Why Roof Area with Pitch Matters
Ordering shingles correctly — shingles are sold by the "square" (100 sq ft), so underestimating means re-ordering mid-job.
Underlayment & ice barrier — these are also calculated on sloped surface area, not footprint.
Labor estimates — steeper roofs take longer to install and cost more per square.
Ventilation sizing — attic ventilation is based on the actual roof area.
Painting or coating — flat roof coatings (for low-slope) apply per sloped sq ft.
Solar panel planning — panel layouts need the real tilt and surface area.
Pitch vs Angle — What's the Difference?
Pitch (in the US) is expressed as rise over 12" of run — e.g. "6:12" or "6/12". Angle is expressed in degrees from horizontal. They describe the same slope in different units.
Conversion: Angle = arctan(rise ÷ 12)
3:12 → 14.04°
4:12 → 18.43°
6:12 → 26.57°
8:12 → 33.69°
12:12 → 45.00°

Roofing Terms You Should Know
Square — 100 sq ft of roof surface. The standard unit for ordering shingles.
Bundle — 3 bundles = 1 square (for standard 3-tab and most architectural shingles).
Run — the horizontal distance from the eave to the ridge (one side of the roof).
Rise — the vertical height from the top of the wall to the ridge.
Rafter — the sloped structural member that supports the roof deck. Its length = √(rise² + run²).
Ridge — the horizontal top edge where two roof planes meet.
Eave — the lower edge of the roof that overhangs the wall.
What This Calculator Estimates
Sloped roof area in square feet
Roof squares (÷ 100) — how many squares of shingles you need
Pitch multiplier — the factor by which your footprint grows
Roof angle in degrees
Rafter length — useful for framing estimates
Ridge length — equals the building length (ridge runs the full span)
Shingle bundles — based on 3 bundles per square + 10% waste
Underlayment rolls — based on 400 sq ft per roll + 10% waste
Drip edge — perimeter of eaves and rakes
Important Notes
This calculator assumes a simple gable roof (two sloped planes). Hip roofs, valleys, dormers, and complex roofs require additional measurements.
Add 10–15% waste for cuts, hips, valleys, and mistakes. The calculator already includes 10% waste in the material estimates.
For multi-slope roofs, calculate each plane separately and sum the results.
Always round up to the next full bundle or roll when ordering.
